Spy x Family Review: The Best-Engineered Comedy on Television
A premise machine that generates jokes and warmth in equal measure. 8.7/10.
Verdict: 8.7 out of 10. Spy x Family is a premise engine — three people each hiding a secret from the other two — and it extracts more comedy per episode from that setup than most shows manage in a season.
Anya is the load-bearing element, and the show knows it. Her telepathy turns every scene into dramatic irony, which is the most reliable comedy generator ever invented.
The action, when it arrives, is startlingly good. Yor's fight choreography is played straight, filmed like a Hong Kong picture, and never undercut by a gag at the wrong moment.
The limitation is escalation. A stasis comedy cannot advance its central lie without ending itself, and the series occasionally stalls while it decides how much plot it wants. When it commits, it is superb.
