Frieren Review: A Fantasy Series That Understands Time

Verdict first: 9.5 out of 10, and the half point withheld is for a mid-season stretch where the episodic structure loosens more than the material needs.

Frieren is a series about the arithmetic of a long life. Ten years is a rounding error to an elf and a decade to everyone she loves, and the show finds a hundred small ways to make that asymmetry hurt without ever raising its voice.

Madhouse's production is the quietest kind of excellent: restrained layouts, unhurried cuts, and an ability to hold on a face long enough for the audience to arrive at the feeling themselves. Evan Call's score does an enormous amount of work and never announces it.

It is also funnier than its reputation suggests. The comedy is dry, character-driven and used precisely to make the grief land harder. That balance is the hardest thing in adaptation, and this staff makes it look effortless.
