Manga Sales Hit Another Record Year: The Numbers Behind the Boom

Digital growth, backlist strength and the demographic shift publishers did not predict.

Digital now accounts for the majority of unit growth, but print remains where the margin lives, and the two are less in competition than publishers feared a decade ago: digital readers convert to collectors at a measurable rate.

Backlist strength is the underreported story. Series that finished years ago continue to sell at volumes that would have been front-list numbers in 2015, driven almost entirely by anime adaptations reintroducing them.

The demographic shift surprised everyone. Growth is fastest among adult readers outside the traditional target demographics, which is reshaping which licences publishers chase.

Bookstore shelf space has followed the money, and manga sections in major western chains have roughly tripled in five years.
