Rewatching Dragon Ball Z in 2026: What Holds Up and What Really Does Not
An honest reassessment of the series that built the modern shonen template. 7.9/10.
Verdict: 7.9 out of 10 as a viewing experience today, 10 out of 10 as an influence. Both numbers are true and they measure different things.
What holds up: silhouette design, escalation structure, and a sense of scale that later series copied without matching. Vegeta remains one of the best-written rivals in the medium.
What does not: pacing, which is genuinely punishing in the broadcast cut, and a habit of resolving conflicts with a new power tier rather than a new idea. The remastered cuts fix the first problem and cannot fix the second.
Watch the Kai edit if you want the story, the original if you want the texture. Either way, the Cell and Frieza arcs are still the blueprint every modern battle series is drawing on.
