ODM Gear Is the Best Action System in Anime, and Here Is the Proof
Fuel, anchor points, momentum and blade wear — the constraints that make every Survey Corps sortie legible.
Most anime power systems are defined by what they let a character do. ODM gear is defined by what it refuses. Gas is finite. Anchors need something solid to bite. Blades chip after a handful of cuts. Momentum, once spent, must be rebuilt from a fixed point.
Those four constraints do all the dramatic work. A soldier out of gas in open country is dead, and the audience knows it without being told, because the rules were established in the first season and never quietly relaxed.
It also makes tactics visible. Formation scouting, flare colours, the decision to fight or disengage — these read as strategy rather than exposition because we understand the resource economy underneath them.
Compare this with any series where power scales to plot need and you can see the cost of the shortcut. Constraint is not a limitation on spectacle. Constraint is what makes spectacle mean something.
