How Realistic Are Attack on Titan's Military Tactics?

The long-range scouting formation is the show's best piece of applied doctrine. Spreading riders in a diamond with relay flares is a genuine reconnaissance-screen solution: maximise detection radius, minimise contact, route the column around threats rather than through them.

Signal discipline is handled with unusual care. Flare colours carry fixed meanings, relay is expected, and the failure mode — a signal chain broken by a single dead rider — is dramatised rather than hand-waved.

Where the fiction bends is attrition tolerance. Real forces with those casualty rates lose cohesion long before the Survey Corps does, and the series eventually acknowledges this through desertion, political pressure and the slow poisoning of the officer corps.

Grade: unusually strong on reconnaissance and logistics, deliberately unrealistic on morale, and honest enough about the latter that the unrealism reads as theme rather than error.
