AI in Anime Production: What Studios Are Actually Using It For

In-between assistance, colour flatting and the line studios say they will not cross.

The honest picture is narrower than either the hype or the panic suggests. Where AI tooling is in production use, it is concentrated in the least expressive parts of the pipeline: colour flatting, in-between assistance on simple motion, and cleanup passes on scanned linework.

Studios that have spoken publicly draw the line at key animation, character design and storyboarding — the stages where authorship is legible and where reputations are made.

The labour question is unresolved. Flatting and in-betweening are also the entry-level jobs through which animators historically learned the craft, and automating the ladder's bottom rung has obvious long-term consequences.

We will report specifics rather than sentiment: which studio, which stage, which tool, and what the staff involved say about it.
