Why Most Isekai Fail and the Handful That Actually Work

The complaint about isekai is usually aimed at the wrong target. Power fantasy is a legitimate mode — every sports story is one. The failure mode is competence with no acquisition cost: a protagonist who arrives already correct and spends twenty-four episodes being confirmed.

The shows that work install a cost. Sometimes it is knowledge that must be applied under pressure, sometimes it is a social world that does not care about your stats, sometimes it is time that passes for everyone else while you level.

Dr. Stone is the cleanest example even though it is barely isekai: Senku's advantage is real knowledge, but knowledge is useless without labour, materials and other people. Every 'power up' is a supply chain built on screen.

Frieren inverts the formula entirely by starting after the quest, making the protagonist's overwhelming power the source of her problem rather than its solution. That is the trick worth stealing: give the fantasy, then charge interest.
